Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Stockton, California was founded in 1849 during the California Gold Rush, as a result of the abundance of gold found in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains. Originally known as Tuleburg, the city was renamed in honor of Commodore Robert F. Stockton, a prominent naval officer in the Mexican-American War. Stockton quickly grew into a bustling hub for agriculture and commerce due to its location along the San Joaquin River, which provided easy access to transportation and trade. The city became known for its fertile soil, producing a variety of crops including grapes, olives, and asparagus. In the early 20th century, Stockton experienced economic prosperity with the development of the Port of Stockton, which became one of the largest inland seaports in California. However, the city also faced challenges such as economic downturns and social issues, including labor strikes and civil rights struggles. Today, Stockton is a diverse and vibrant city, known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and thriving arts scene.
