Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Stockton, California was originally inhabited by the indigenous Miwok people before Spanish explorers arrived in the 18th century. The area was then settled by Mexican ranchers who established large cattle ranches in the fertile valley. In the mid-19th century, the California Gold Rush brought an influx of settlers to the area, leading to the founding of Stockton in 1849. The city quickly became a major transportation hub, with steamboats navigating the San Joaquin River and railways connecting Stockton to San Francisco and Sacramento. Stockton also became known for its agricultural production, particularly in grapes, cherries, and asparagus. Throughout its history, Stockton has faced challenges such as economic downturns and natural disasters, including major floods in the early 20th century. However, the city has persevered and today is a vibrant community known for its diverse population, cultural attractions, and picturesque waterfront.
