Welcome to the Newto News for April of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Staten Island, located in New York City, has a rich history that dates back to the indigenous Lenape people who originally inhabited the island. In the 17th century, European settlers began to arrive, establishing farms and trading posts. The island was named after the Dutch parliamentarian, Staten Generaal, in 1664 when it was acquired by the British. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Staten Island became a popular vacation destination due to its natural beauty and seaside attractions. The construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1964 connected the island to the rest of New York City, leading to increased residential development and population growth. Today, Staten Island is known for its diverse communities, vibrant cultural scene, and historic landmarks such as the Staten Island Zoo and Snug Harbor Cultural Center. It remains a popular residential area for New Yorkers looking for a suburban feel within the city.
