Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Starkville, Mississippi, originally known as Boardtown, was founded in 1831 by Revolutionary War veteran and Mississippi Senator Oktibbeha County. The town was named after his wife, whose maiden name was Stark. During the Civil War, Starkville became a strategic location due to its proximity to key railroads and its industrial capabilities. The town was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces at various points during the conflict. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Starkville experienced significant growth and development, with the establishment of Mississippi State University in 1878 bringing a new wave of residents and economic opportunities to the area. Today, Starkville is a thriving college town known for its vibrant community, rich history, and strong ties to agriculture and education. The city continues to evolve and grow, while still celebrating its roots and preserving its historic landmarks.
