Springfield, Illinois was founded in 1819, originally known as Calhoun. The name was changed to Springfield in 1832, in honor of the city in Massachusetts. Springfield quickly became a hub for commerce and trade due to its location near the Sangamon River and the newly constructed Illinois-Michigan Canal. In the mid-19th century, Springfield became the state capital of Illinois. It was also a focal point of political activity, as Abraham Lincoln launched his political career in the city and lived there for many years before becoming the 16th President of the United States. During the Civil War, Springfield played a crucial role in supplying troops and resources to the Union Army. After the war, the city continued to grow and prosper, becoming an important center for agriculture, manufacturing, and education. Today, Springfield is a vibrant city with a rich historical heritage, attracting visitors from around the country to explore its many historic sites and landmarks related to Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.
