Springfield, Illinois, located in central Illinois, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. The city was founded in 1821 and quickly grew as a hub for trade and commerce due to its location on the Sangamon River. In 1837, Springfield became the state capital of Illinois and has remained so ever since. Throughout its history, Springfield has been a prominent center for politics, as it was the home and final resting place of President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln practiced law in Springfield and was involved in state politics before becoming president. The city is home to numerous historic sites related to Lincoln, including his former home and the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
