Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Springfield, Illinois, was founded in 1818 by European-American settlers and named for Springfield, Massachusetts. The city quickly became a center of commerce and government in central Illinois due to its location on the Sangamon River and its proximity to key transportation routes. In the 1830s, Springfield became the capital of Illinois, further solidifying its position as a political hub. It was during this time that a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln moved to Springfield and began his political career, eventually becoming the 16th President of the United States. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Springfield continued to grow and thrive, becoming a major center for education, health care, and manufacturing. Today, the city is known for its rich history, vibrant arts and culture scene, and numerous historical sites related to Abraham Lincoln. Springfield remains a bustling city with a strong sense of community and pride in its past.
