Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Spokane, Washington, located in the Pacific Northwest, has a rich history dating back to the indigenous tribes who first inhabited the region. The area was originally home to the Spokane tribe, who lived along the Spokane River for thousands of years. In the late 19th century, European settlers began to arrive in the area, drawn by the abundance of natural resources, including timber, gold, and minerals. The city of Spokane was officially incorporated in 1881 and quickly became a hub for trade and commerce in the region. The completion of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1883 further fueled the city’s growth, leading to an economic boom as goods and resources were transported throughout the country. Over the years, Spokane has faced challenges such as economic downturns and natural disasters, including the devastating fire of 1889. However, the city has always proven resilient, rebuilding and reinventing itself to become the vibrant cultural and economic center it is today. From hosting the 1974 World’s Fair to its thriving arts scene and outdoor recreation opportunities, Spokane continues to attract residents and visitors alike, eager to experience its unique blend of history and modernity.
