Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. South Bend, Indiana was founded in 1831 by fur trader Alexis Coquillard and land speculator Lathrop M. Taylor. The city’s name comes from its location on the southernmost bend of the St. Joseph River. In its early years, South Bend was a booming industrial town, with a strong emphasis on manufacturing and transportation. The city became known for its production of wagons, carriages, and later automobiles. South Bend also became a center for innovation in the early 20th century, with the founding of the University of Notre Dame in 1842. The university brought a new intellectual and cultural presence to the city, attracting students and faculty from around the world. Over the years, South Bend has faced its share of challenges, including economic downturns and racial tensions. However, the city has continued to evolve and grow, becoming a vibrant hub for education, arts, and industry in the Midwest. Today, South Bend is a diverse and thriving city with a rich history and promising future.
