Savannah, Georgia is a historic city located on the east coast of the United States. Founded in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe, Savannah was the first planned city in the American colonies. The city quickly became a hub of trade and commerce, thanks to its strategic location on the Savannah River. Throughout its history, Savannah played a significant role in American history. During the Revolutionary War, the city was a crucial port for the British Navy. In the years following the war, Savannah grew rapidly, becoming an important center for agriculture and industry in the South. Savannah is also known for its role in the Civil War, as it was a key location for Union forces to capture in order to block Confederate access to the Atlantic Ocean. After the war, the city underwent a period of reconstruction and growth, eventually becoming the charming and historic city that it is today. Savannah’s beautiful architecture, historic landmarks, and vibrant cultural scene continue to attract visitors from around the world.
