Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Santa Rosa, California, originally inhabited by various indigenous tribes such as the Pomo and Miwok people, was officially founded in 1833 as a Mexican land grant called Rancho Cabeza de Santa Rosa. The city’s name is Spanish for “Saint Rose”, in honor of Saint Rose of Lima. Santa Rosa saw significant growth during the California Gold Rush in the mid-1800s, attracting settlers looking to strike it rich. The city became a center of trade and agriculture, particularly known for its vineyards and wineries. In the early 20th century, Santa Rosa experienced a devastating earthquake in 1906 which destroyed much of the city’s infrastructure. However, it was quickly rebuilt with new buildings and a revitalized downtown area. Throughout the 20th century, Santa Rosa continued to grow and develop, becoming known for its strong sense of community, beautiful parks, and vibrant arts and culture scene. Today, Santa Rosa is a thriving city that celebrates its rich history while looking towards a bright future.
