Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Santa Rosa, California was founded in 1833 by a group of Mexican settlers led by Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. Originally known as “Santa Rosa de Lima”, the city quickly grew as an agricultural hub due to its fertile soil and mild climate. In the late 19th century, Santa Rosa became a major center for the burgeoning wine industry, with vineyards dotting the surrounding hills. The city faced devastation in 1906 when a massive earthquake struck, destroying much of downtown Santa Rosa. However, the city quickly rebuilt and continued to thrive, becoming a hub for government services and a major transportation center with the arrival of the railroad. In the 20th century, Santa Rosa saw continued growth and development, becoming known for its arts and culture scene, as well as its commitment to environmental sustainability. Today, Santa Rosa is a vibrant city with a diverse population, offering a mix of urban amenities and natural beauty.
