Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Santa Rosa, California was founded in 1833 by Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a prominent Mexican military officer and rancher. Originally named after Saint Rose of Lima, the city began as a small agricultural community in the heart of Sonoma County. In the mid-19th century, Santa Rosa started to grow rapidly due to the California Gold Rush, which brought an influx of settlers seeking their fortune in the surrounding area. The city became a hub for trade, agriculture, and industry, with a booming downtown and a diverse population. In 1906, Santa Rosa was hit hard by a devastating earthquake that destroyed much of the city, including its historic downtown district. However, the community quickly rebuilt and continued to thrive, becoming a center for agriculture and viticulture in the region. Today, Santa Rosa is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, award-winning wineries, and beautiful parks and gardens. It remains a diverse and thriving city with a rich history and strong sense of community.
