Santa Rosa, California was founded in the 1830s by Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a Mexican military officer. Originally named Villa de Sonoma, the city was later renamed Santa Rosa after Saint Rose of Lima. During the California Gold Rush in the mid-19th century, Santa Rosa experienced rapid growth due to its location as a transportation hub and agricultural center. The city became known for its vineyards, producing some of the state’s finest wines.
