Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Santa Barbara, California, originally inhabited by the Native American Chumash tribe, was first discovered by Spanish explorers in 1542. In 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino named the area “Santa Barbara” after Saint Barbara. The Spanish colonial period saw the construction of the Santa Barbara Mission in 1786, which became a central hub for the region. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Santa Barbara flourished as a thriving agricultural community, known for its wine production and citrus fruits. The city also became a popular resort destination due to its idyllic climate and stunning beaches. In 1925, a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the city’s architecture, leading to a resurgence in Spanish Colonial Revival-style buildings that still define Santa Barbara’s aesthetic today. Today, Santa Barbara is a vibrant city known for its cultural attractions, outdoor activities, and luxurious lifestyle. It remains a popular destination for tourists and residents alike, seeking the perfect blend of history, beauty, and charm.
