Santa Barbara, California, also known as the “American Riviera,” has a rich history dating back to the Chumash Native Americans who inhabited the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The city was officially founded in 1786 by Spanish settlers and named after Saint Barbara. Throughout the 19th century, Santa Barbara developed as a thriving agricultural community, known for its citrus fruits, olives, and vineyards. The city experienced a devastating earthquake in 1925 which led to a strong focus on Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in the rebuilding process. In the 20th century, Santa Barbara became a popular destination for Hollywood celebrities and tourists, attracted by its beautiful beaches, mild climate, and Mediterranean-style architecture. The city also played a role in the environmental movement of the 1960s and 70s, with the infamous oil spill of 1969 leading to increased activism for environmental conservation. Today, Santa Barbara is a vibrant coastal city known for its upscale resorts, cultural attractions, and stunning natural beauty.
