Originally founded in 1777 as El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, San Jose is the oldest civilian settlement in California and one of the oldest cities in the United States. Initially a farming community, San Jose was a key stop along the El Camino Real, the historic trail that connected the Spanish missions in California.
