Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

San Francisco, California, has a rich and diverse history dating back to its founding in 1776 by Spanish colonists. Originally named Yerba Buena, the city quickly grew into a thriving port town during the California Gold Rush in the mid-19th century. With the discovery of gold in the Sierra Nevada foothills, San Francisco became a major hub for immigrants from all over the world seeking their fortune. In the early 20th century, the city experienced a devastating earthquake in 1906, but quickly rebounded and rebuilt, becoming a center for innovation and progress. During World War II, San Francisco served as a key military port and was a major departure point for troops heading to the Pacific theater. Today, San Francisco is known for its vibrant cultural scene, iconic landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, and as a hub for technology and innovation. The city’s history is a testament to its resilience and ability to adapt and thrive in the face of challenges.
