Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

San Francisco, California, was originally inhabited by the Ohlone people before Spanish explorers arrived in the 18th century. In 1776, the Spanish established the Presidio of San Francisco and the Mission San Francisco de Asís, now known as Mission Dolores. The city began to grow rapidly during the California Gold Rush of the mid-19th century, earning the nickname “The City by the Bay.” The population swelled with fortune seekers from around the world, leading to the establishment of neighborhoods like Chinatown and the development of cable cars to navigate the city’s hilly terrain. San Francisco played a key role in the labor movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with events like the 1934 general strike and the founding of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. The city also became a hub for the Beat Generation in the 1950s and the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Today, San Francisco is known for its iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, as well as its tech industry and diverse population.
