Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

San Francisco, California has a rich and colorful history that dates back to its founding in 1776 by Spanish settlers. Originally called Yerba Buena, the city’s name was changed to San Francisco in 1847. During the mid-19th century, San Francisco experienced a population boom due to the California Gold Rush, with thousands of fortune seekers flocking to the city in search of riches. This influx of people helped to establish San Francisco as a major commercial and financial center on the West Coast. In 1906, a devastating earthquake and subsequent fire destroyed much of the city, but San Francisco quickly rebuilt and continued to thrive. Throughout the 20th century, San Francisco became known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, as well as its progressive politics and activism. Today, San Francisco is a bustling hub of technology and innovation, with Silicon Valley just a short drive away. The city’s iconic landmarks, such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, continue to draw visitors from around the world.
