Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

San Diego, California was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people for thousands of years before Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century. In 1769, Spanish missionaries established the first European settlement in the area, known as the Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcala. The city grew slowly under Spanish and Mexican rule, becoming part of the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. With the development of the Santa Fe Railroad in the late 19th century, San Diego experienced a population boom and economic growth. The city was officially incorporated in 1850 and continued to thrive as a major port and military hub. During World War II, San Diego became a key base for the U.S. Navy and defense industry, further solidifying its importance on the West Coast. Today, San Diego is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant cultural scene, and thriving technology and biotech industries.
