San Diego, California has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. The area was originally home to the Kumeyaay people, who lived along the coast and in the surrounding valleys for centuries. In 1542, the Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to visit the region, claiming it for Spain.
