San Diego, California, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who were skilled hunters and gatherers. In 1542, European explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claimed the land for Spain. In the 18th century, San Diego became a Spanish settlement and later a Mexican pueblo. In 1848, as a result of the Mexican-American War, San Diego became part of the United States. The city saw rapid growth during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s, becoming a hub for trade and commerce. In the early 20th century, San Diego became known for its military presence, with the establishment of multiple naval bases and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Today, San Diego is a thriving city known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and diverse population. It is a popular tourist destination, with attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and the historic Gaslamp Quarter.
