San Diego, California has a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years. Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, the area was later discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. In 1769, the Spanish established the Presidio of San Diego and the Mission San Diego de Alcala, marking the beginning of European settlement in the region.
