Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

San Diego, California has a rich history dating back thousands of years to when it was inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. The area was first visited by Europeans in 1542 when Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claimed it for Spain. The Spanish then established a mission in the area in 1769, which was the first of 21 missions along the California coast. In the 19th century, San Diego became known for its fishing, whaling, and shipping industries, as well as its military presence with the establishment of Fort Stockton and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. The city’s population grew rapidly following the arrival of the Santa Fe Railway in the late 1800s. During World War II, San Diego played a crucial role as a major naval base and defense hub for the Pacific theater. In the latter half of the 20th century, the city’s economy diversified with the growth of tourism, biotechnology, and telecommunications industries. Today, San Diego is a thriving urban center known for its beautiful beaches, cultural attractions, and innovation in various sectors.
