San Diego, California, has a rich history dating back thousands of years to when the Kumeyaay people inhabited the region. Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, claiming the area for Spain and establishing missions along the coast. The city was officially founded in 1769 by Father Junipero Serra, who established the Mission San Diego de Alcalá. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, San Diego developed into a bustling port city with a thriving fishing and shipping industry. The city also became a hub for the US Navy, with the establishment of naval bases such as Naval Base San Diego and Naval Air Station North Island. In the latter half of the 20th century, San Diego experienced rapid growth and development, becoming known for its beautiful beaches, thriving tourism industry, and world-renowned research institutions like the University of California, San Diego. Today, San Diego is a vibrant city known for its diverse culture, beautiful landscapes, and thriving economy.
