San Diego, California, known for its stunning beaches and perfect weather, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who were skilled hunters and gatherers. In 1542, Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to set foot in what is now San Diego. The settlement of the area began in the late 1700s with the establishment of the Presidio of San Diego and the Mission San Diego de Alcalá. San Diego became a part of Mexico in 1821 before being annexed by the United States in 1848 as a result of the Mexican-American War. The city experienced a population boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad and the U.S. Navy establishing a presence in the area. Today, San Diego is a vibrant city known for its diverse culture, thriving economy, and world-renowned attractions such as the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park.
