Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

San Diego, California has a long and rich history dating back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who were skilled hunters and gatherers. The first European to visit the area was Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. In 1769, the Spanish established a presidio and a mission in what is now Old Town San Diego, marking the beginning of European settlement in the region. The city grew rapidly after the USA acquired California as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The discovery of gold in California brought even more settlers to the area. San Diego’s economy boomed during World War II, when it became a major military hub and defense contractor. Today, San Diego is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and thriving economy. It is home to numerous universities, research institutions, and biotech companies, making it a hub for innovation and technology.
