Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Salem, Oregon was founded in 1842 by Jason Lee, a missionary and pioneer who established the first Methodist mission in the Willamette Valley. The city was named after the biblical city of Salem, which means “peace.” In the mid-19th century, Salem became the capital of the Oregon Territory and later the state of Oregon. The city played a key role in the expansion of the western United States, serving as a major hub for trade and transportation. Throughout its history, Salem has experienced periods of growth and development, as well as challenges such as fires and economic downturns. The city has always been a center of government, education, and culture in Oregon, with a strong sense of community and civic pride. Today, Salem is a thriving city with a diverse population and a rich history that is celebrated through its museums, historic landmarks, and vibrant arts scene.
