Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Salem, Oregon was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Kalapuya people, who had been living in the area for centuries before the arrival of European settlers. In the early 1800s, missionaries and fur trappers began to establish settlements in the region, with the first permanent European settlers arriving in the mid-1800s. Salem was officially founded in 1842 and became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851. The city quickly grew as an important center for trade and agriculture in the Willamette Valley, with industries such as logging, agriculture, and manufacturing driving its economy. Salem played a significant role in Oregon’s history, with the state government passing important legislation and making key decisions from the capital city. Today, Salem is a vibrant and diverse city known for its historic downtown, beautiful parks, and thriving arts and culture scene.
