Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Sacramento, California, originally inhabited by the Nisenan people, was settled by Spanish explorers in 1808. It quickly grew into a bustling trading post due to its strategic location at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers. In 1848, Sacramento experienced a population boom during the California Gold Rush, becoming a major hub for prospectors on their way to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The city was incorporated in 1850, the same year that California achieved statehood. By the late 19th century, Sacramento had become a center for agriculture, particularly for its production of almonds, citrus fruits, and grapes. The city also became a major transportation hub, with the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 and the construction of the Tower Bridge in 1935. Today, Sacramento is the capital of California and known for its diverse culture, historic Old Sacramento district, and thriving arts and food scene.
