Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Rochester, New York was founded in 1812 by Nathaniel Rochester, Charles Carroll, and William Fitzhugh. The trio purchased land along the Genesee River and developed a settlement that would soon become a bustling city. The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 played a crucial role in Rochester’s growth, connecting the city to the Great Lakes and New York City, propelling it into a major transportation hub. By the mid-19th century, Rochester had established itself as a center for innovation and industry, with companies like Eastman Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb calling the city home. The city became known for its advancements in photography, optics, and technology. Rochester also played an important role in the abolitionist movement, with noted activists such as Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony residing in the city. Today, Rochester continues to be a vibrant city with a rich history, cultural attractions, and a strong emphasis on education and innovation.
