Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Rochester, New York, situated on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, has a rich and diverse history dating back to the 18th century. Originally inhabited by the Seneca Native American tribe, the area became an important trading post for fur traders in the late 1700s. In 1817, the city was officially founded by Nathaniel Rochester, Charles Carroll, and William Fitzhugh, and quickly grew into a thriving industrial hub. The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 further boosted Rochester’s economy, allowing for increased trade and commerce. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Rochester became known for its innovation in industries such as optics, photography, and manufacturing. The city was home to companies like Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, and Xerox, earning it the nickname “The World’s Image Center.” Today, Rochester maintains its reputation as a center of technology and innovation, with a strong focus on education and research. Its vibrant cultural scene, historic landmarks, and picturesque landscapes continue to attract visitors from around the world.
