Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Originally inhabited by the Seneca Native American tribe, Rochester was first settled by European colonists in the late 18th century. It quickly became an important manufacturing hub due to its proximity to the Genesee River, which provided power for mills and factories. In the early 19th century, Rochester experienced rapid growth as a center for flour production, earning it the nickname “Flour City.” By the mid-19th century, the city’s economy diversified with the rise of industries such as optics, photography, and technology. Rochester became known as the “World’s Image Center” due to the presence of companies like Eastman Kodak and Xerox. The city also played a significant role in the abolitionist movement and was a key stop on the Underground Railroad. Today, Rochester is a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage, renowned universities, and a thriving arts scene. It continues to be a center for innovation and technology, drawing visitors and new residents alike.
