Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Rochester, New York, originally inhabited by the Seneca tribe, was settled by European explorers in the late 18th century. The city was officially founded in 1817 by Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, who envisioned a thriving community on the Genesee River. Rochester quickly became a hub of industry, with flourishing flour mills, textile factories, and later, the birthplace of companies like Eastman Kodak and Xerox. The city’s growth attracted waves of immigrants, including Irish, Italian, and German populations, shaping its diverse culture. Rochester’s prominence in the 19th century as a center for abolitionist movements and women’s suffrage earned it the nickname “the Flour City” and “the Flower City.” Today, Rochester remains a vibrant cultural and economic center in upstate New York, known for its historic neighborhoods, strong educational institutions such as the University of Rochester, and iconic landmarks like the George Eastman Museum.
