Reno, Nevada was founded in 1868 as a small settlement along the Truckee River. Originally named Lake’s Crossing, the town quickly grew as a supply center for the booming mining industry in the area. In 1871, the town was renamed Reno in honor of General Jesse Reno, a Union officer who was killed in the Civil War. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Reno continued to thrive as a hub for mining, agriculture, and the railroad industry. The city gained notoriety for its lenient divorce laws, earning the nickname “The Divorce Capital of the World.” As a result, many wealthy individuals came to Reno to obtain quick and easy divorces, boosting the city’s economy. In the mid-20th century, Reno experienced a resurgence in growth and development, becoming known for its vibrant casino industry and entertainment scene. Today, Reno is a bustling city known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, cultural events, and thriving economy.
