Reno, Nevada, named after Civil War General Jesse Reno, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1868. Originally a small settlement along the Truckee River, Reno quickly grew into a bustling mining town during the silver rush of the late 19th century. In the early 20th century, Reno became known as the “Divorce Capital of the World” due to its lenient divorce laws, attracting countless couples seeking quick divorces. Reno continued to thrive throughout the 20th century, with the establishment of the University of Nevada in 1885 and the construction of lavish hotel-casinos, such as the famous Harrah’s Reno. The city also became a popular entertainment destination, known for its vibrant nightlife and numerous cultural events. Today, Reno is a diverse and dynamic city, known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, including skiing, hiking, and boating on nearby Lake Tahoe. The city also hosts events such as the Reno Air Races and the Reno Rodeo, attracting visitors from around the world.
