Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Raleigh, North Carolina was founded in 1792 as the new capital of the state, replacing the previous capital of New Bern. The city was named after Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer and sponsor of the Roanoke Colony. In its early years, Raleigh served as a center for government and commerce, with the North Carolina State Capitol building being completed in 1840. During the Civil War, Raleigh played a significant role as a Confederate stronghold, serving as a hub for military operations and supply distribution. The city experienced growth and development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the establishment of North Carolina State University in 1887 and the expansion of industries such as textiles and banking. Today, Raleigh is known for its thriving research and technology sectors, as well as its vibrant arts and cultural scene. The city continues to grow rapidly, attracting new residents and businesses seeking a dynamic urban environment with a rich historical heritage.
