Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Providence, Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a political and religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Williams established the settlement on land purchased from the Narragansett Native American tribe, declaring it a place of religious freedom and tolerance for all. The city quickly grew into a major hub for trade and commerce, due to its strategic location at the head of Narragansett Bay. In the 19th century, Providence became known for its thriving textile and manufacturing industries, attracting thousands of immigrants seeking employment opportunities. The city also played a significant role in the abolitionist movement, with many residents actively participating in the Underground Railroad. Today, Providence is recognized for its historic architecture, vibrant arts scene, and renowned institutions of higher education such as Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. The city continues to be a center of innovation and culture in New England, attracting visitors from around the world.
