Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Princeton, New Jersey was founded in 1666 by Quaker settlers who named the town after their ancestral home of Princeton, in Wales. Originally a small farming community, Princeton grew in importance during the Revolutionary War when it served as a key strategic location for General George Washington’s army. In 1783, the town also briefly served as the capital of the United States before the government relocated to Philadelphia. Princeton’s most well-known institution, Princeton University, was established in 1746 as the College of New Jersey. The university has since become one of the top Ivy League schools in the country, attracting students and scholars from all over the world. In addition to its academic prestige, Princeton is also known for its picturesque downtown area, lined with charming shops and restaurants, as well as its rich cultural scene, including the McCarter Theatre Center and numerous art galleries. Today, Princeton continues to be a thriving community that blends history, education, and culture.
