Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Portland, Oregon was founded in 1845 on the banks of the Willamette River by pioneers who were drawn to the area’s abundant natural resources and fertile land. Originally known as “The Clearing,” the growing settlement was renamed Portland in 1849 after a coin toss between its two founders, Asa Lovejoy and Francis W. Pettygrove. The city quickly became a major hub for lumber and shipping industries, with the development of a deep-water port and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad in the 1880s. By the early 20th century, Portland had established itself as a center for manufacturing and trade, attracting immigrants from around the world seeking economic opportunities. In the latter half of the 20th century, Portland experienced significant growth and urban renewal, with the construction of iconic landmarks like Pioneer Courthouse Square and the Portland International Airport. Today, Portland is known for its thriving arts scene, eco-friendly initiatives, and vibrant food and craft beer culture, making it a popular destination for tourists and residents alike.
