Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1691 by French explorer Henri de Tonti, Peoria, Illinois has a rich history that spans over three centuries. Originally established as a trading post for fur trappers and Native American tribes, the city quickly grew into a thriving hub for commerce and industry. During the 19th century, Peoria became known for its manufacturing sector, particularly in the production of farm equipment and whiskey. The city’s proximity to the Illinois River made it an ideal location for transportation and trade. In the early 20th century, Peoria faced economic challenges as the Great Depression hit the region hard. However, the city rebounded during World War II with the expansion of the Caterpillar Tractor Company, which bolstered the local economy and provided thousands of jobs. Today, Peoria continues to thrive as a diverse and dynamic city, known for its cultural attractions, educational institutions, and strong sense of community. Its rich history and resilient spirit make it a cherished destination for residents and visitors alike.
