Oxford, Mississippi, located in Lafayette County, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1837. The city was named after the prestigious university town of Oxford, England, in hopes of emulating its academic reputation. Throughout the 19th century, Oxford grew as a center for education and culture in the region, with the founding of the University of Mississippi in 1848. The university brought with it a diverse population of students and scholars who helped to shape the town’s character. During the Civil War, Oxford played a significant role as a strategic point for both the Union and Confederate forces. The town was a site of several battles, including the Battle of Ox Ford in 1864. In the 20th century, Oxford continued to flourish as a hub of education and culture, attracting notable writers such as William Faulkner, who famously called the town home. Today, Oxford remains a vibrant community known for its historic charm, literary heritage, and thriving arts scene.
