Oxford, Mississippi, founded in 1837, has a rich history deeply entrenched in Southern tradition. Named after the prestigious university town in England, Oxford has long been an intellectual hub, home to the University of Mississippi. The city played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, with the university being at the center of national attention during the integration of its first African American student, James Meredith. Oxford is also famous for its literary heritage, as it was the home of renowned writer William Faulkner for most of his life. Faulkner’s legacy is still evident in the city, with many of his novels being set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, inspired by the landscape and people of Oxford. Today, Oxford continues to preserve its historic charm while also embracing modernity, attracting visitors with its vibrant arts scene, culinary delights, and diverse cultural offerings.
