Welcome to the Newto News for April of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Omaha, Nebraska was founded in 1854 along the banks of the Missouri River by speculators from Council Bluffs, Iowa. The city grew rapidly as a transportation hub for the expanding United States, with the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869 bringing even more growth to the area. Omaha became known for its stockyards and meatpacking industry, earning the nickname “The Gateway to the West.” In the early 20th century, Omaha experienced a period of economic growth and cultural development, with the construction of art deco buildings and the establishment of renowned institutions like the Omaha Symphony Orchestra. The city also played a significant role in the civil rights movement, hosting the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition where African American activists challenged segregation policies. Today, Omaha is a thriving metropolitan area known for its diverse population, vibrant arts scene, and strong economy. It continues to be a major center for transportation, finance, and agriculture in the Midwest.
