Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Odessa, Texas was founded in 1881 as a water stop and cattle shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. Named after the Ukrainian city of the same name, Odessa quickly grew in population as settlers flocked to the area to take advantage of the booming cattle industry. In the early 1900s, oil was discovered in the Permian Basin, bringing even more prosperity to Odessa. The city experienced a population boom as oil workers and their families moved to the area in search of work. Throughout the 20th century, Odessa continued to thrive as a center for oil production and transportation. The city also became known for its high school football team, the Permian Panthers, which inspired the book and film “Friday Night Lights.” Today, Odessa is a bustling city with a diverse economy that includes oil production, agriculture, and manufacturing. It remains a vibrant community with a rich history and a strong sense of pride in its heritage.
