Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Ocala, Florida was first settled by the Timucua Native Americans before Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century. The area became a popular trading post for early settlers and a hub for citrus farming in the 19th century. In 1846, the US Army established Fort King in Ocala during the Second Seminole War, further solidifying the town’s importance. Ocala was officially incorporated in 1869 and quickly grew into a thriving community with the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s. The city became known for its thoroughbred horse farms and was even dubbed the “Horse Capital of the World.” Ocala’s historic downtown area and Victorian architecture attract tourists and history buffs alike. Today, Ocala boasts a diverse economy with industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, and agriculture contributing to its growth. The city continues to preserve its rich history while also embracing modern development.
