Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Oakland, California was founded in 1852 by Horace Carpentier and named after the abundance of oak trees that filled the area. Originally a small farming community, the city quickly grew due to its location on the San Francisco Bay and its access to shipping routes. In the late 19th century, Oakland became a major transportation hub for the newly developing western United States, with a busy port and railroad connections to the rest of the country. During the mid-20th century, Oakland experienced rapid industrialization and a population boom as people flocked to the city for work in the burgeoning manufacturing and shipping industries. However, in the 1960s and 70s, Oakland faced social and economic challenges, including rising crime rates and urban blight. In recent years, Oakland has undergone a revitalization, with a focus on arts and culture, as well as sustainable development. Today, Oakland is known for its diverse population, thriving arts scene, and vibrant culinary offerings.
