Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Oakland, California was founded in 1852 by Horace Carpentier near the waterfront of the San Francisco Bay. Originally named “Contra Costa” by the Spanish settlers, the city was later renamed in honor of the beautiful oak trees that filled the area. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Oakland experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location as a port city and its proximity to San Francisco. The construction of the transcontinental railroad and the development of the automobile industry further fueled the city’s expansion. During World War II, Oakland became a major hub for shipbuilding and manufacturing, supporting the war effort with its industrial capabilities. After the war, Oakland saw a population boom as people flocked to the area in search of job opportunities and a higher quality of life. Today, Oakland is a vibrant and diverse city known for its thriving arts and culture scene, bustling waterfront, and vibrant neighborhoods. It remains a symbol of resilience and innovation, embodying the spirit of California’s Golden State.
