Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Oakland, California was originally inhabited by the Ohlone tribe before the Spanish arrived in the 18th century. The city was officially founded in 1852 as a shipping port for the surrounding agricultural region. With the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, Oakland experienced rapid growth and development, becoming a major hub for trade and transportation. During the early 20th century, Oakland saw an influx of African Americans from the southern United States seeking job opportunities in the booming shipbuilding and manufacturing industries. The city also played a significant role in the civil rights movement, as home to influential activist groups and leaders like the Black Panther Party. In recent years, Oakland has undergone a revitalization, with a thriving arts scene, diverse culinary offerings, and a strong technology sector. The city has also faced challenges such as gentrification and rising housing costs, but continues to be a vibrant and culturally rich urban center in the San Francisco Bay Area.
